So you want to be an arts critic?

Arts & Culture is hiring Arts Critics through an accelerated version of our entry-level program. Specifically, we're looking for people to review film, stage productions, music, and visual art.
If accepted, you'll focus on one or more of these areas and be trained in arts journalism. You'll be expected to file at least one story every two weeks, working closely with your editor.
After your fourth story, you'll be asked to take a brief test, which ensures every member of our team is a skilled, reliable, ethically-minded journalist. If you pass, you'll be offered a place as a permanent staff member of our publication, which also makes you eligible to become an editor, one day. You'll need to be available for the Arts & Culture section meeting, which runs weekly on Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

If you have any questions about this application, please email Managing Editor Saumya Kamra and Deputy Managing Editor Spencer Izen at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. We especially welcome and encourage applications from members of marginalized communities.
Your privacy is important to us. The information collected by us using this form will only be used by and disclosed to relevant editors to process your application. If you are selected, when we meet you in person, we'll ask to see your UBC Student Card to verify your identity, but we will not be collecting that information here. Artificial intelligence will not be used in processing your application in any way, and all decisions will be made by our team of real people.
Applications close January 25 at 5 p.m.
